Storytelling Books to Get Lost In
Aren’t all books storytelling books? Now, this might sound a bit weird but hear me out. Of course, all books have a plot but not all of them really feel like an actual story. One that you can really get lost in and feel so attached to the characters that you’re convinced they’re real. Not all books make you want to immerse yourself in their world, so I think it’s a really special thing when that happens. They are reads that I have never forgotten and still stay with me to this day.
Here are my top 5 books which really feel like they’re telling me a story.
Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmie Lang
If you follow me on Instagram you’ll hear me rave about this book and it’s for good reason. I adored everything about this book, from the characters to the unusual way it was written. It follows the charming story of Weylyn, who was raised by wolves. But his story doesn’t end there. This book is told from the different people who have met him, knew him, and possibly loved him, and they all tell the story that he left them with. This truly is a one of a kind book and I haven’t read anything like it. I’m still searching for a book that made me feel this warm and fuzzy inside. This book is one of the best storytelling books out there.
Bone Gap by Laura Ruby
This is a retelling of the Persephone story, and it really doesn’t disappoint. It’s from the perspective of Finn, a young man with face blindness, meaning he doesn’t recognise people’s faces. When Roza suddenly goes missing, Finn knows that she has been kidnapped. And now he just has to find her. It’s a story of love, mystery, and magic and is sometimes just plain weird. But I read it so quickly and still to this day adore it as much as I did when I read the last page. This storytelling book had me hooked.
Once Upon a River by Dianne Setterfield.
This is storytelling at it’s finest. Like seriously, if you were going to look up storytelling in the dictionary, Once upon a River would be right there underneath it. Once Upon a River is the story of a town on the River Thames and a young girl who mysteriously comes back to life after everyone thought she was dead. There are so many characters and stories to get involved with that it’s almost impossible to choose whose story I loved the most. But they’re all so unusual and magical that they will leave you wanting more.
The Gloaming by Kirsty Logan
The best lives leave a mark. And this book is for sure going to leave a mark on you. The Gloaming really is a world of magic, fairytales and folklore. What I love most about this is that Logan’s writing is so easy to interpret in many different ways, meaning the story will mean something different to everyone. The Gloaming is all about feminity, love and loss and what it means to be a woman on Mara’s island. This is a book that really shows how real life and fairy tales may not be as wide a gap as we thought.
Blankets by Craig Thompson
Blankets is different from these other books mostly because it’s a graphic novel, but almost because it’s not that magical. It’s the story of a young man falling in love, but I really felt like I was reading, and looking, at an album of his life. He felt so real to me and I was lapping up his story page after page. It’s incredibly immersive and is also different because it’s a pretty thick graphic novel. If you’re not into magic but want to see how magical storytelling can be, this is one that you should pick up.
