Creative selfies are in my opinion the best selfies you can take.

When you think of taking a selfie, you may think of just taking a photo on the front camera of your phone, but that doesn’t always have to be the case! Selfies can actually be really fun and super creative if you want them to be!

There are loads of different ways to make your selfies super creative – there’s actually too many to count! But I thought I would just create a little list of all ways I make my selfies creative for when I want to give my creative selfies a little snazz!

Tell a Story

I love storytelling with my photos and it’s super easy to do! By combining different props, outfits, and set ups you can, quite literally, tell any type of story that you want!

Do Fun Make Up

Doing a fun makeup look can really up your selfies! Whether it’s something that is bright and colourful that matches your outfit or the props in the photo, or whether you want to create a fun halloween look, there are so many ways to make your make up the centerpiece of the photo.

I am definitely not a professional when it comes to make up, but I love trying new things and experimenting with my make up, especially when I’m becoming a character or want to create a certain look or feel with my imagery.

Never underestimate the power of a prop! If you’re feeling a bit awkward taking photos (I know that definitely used to be the case for me) then a prop can really help take the edge off as it gives you something to interact with. It could be absolutely anything, and I have an entire blog post dedicated to props in selfies if you’re looking for some inspiration!

If you’re just starting out with using props, I would definitely recommend using flowers and they are so versatile.

Stick Things to Your Face

You can get stickers, pearls, and gems that are safe to put on your face and they are a lot of fun! They add some interest to the photo and will inspire you to get creative with different angles and positions.

Using stickers are particularly fun if you’re theming your photo. For example, for one of my valentines day posts I stuck some love hearts to my face.

Play Around With Double Exposure

This is something that I’ve done a few different times in my photos. There’s a few different ways to do this, you can actually do it in camera if you’re tech savvy, but in my opinion, the easiest way to do double exposure is in photoshop or some kind of editing software.

All you have to do is to take two different photos from the same angle in different poses, add them both into photoshop and then turn down the opacity of one of the photos and boom! You have a double exposure photo!

This idea is good if you want to convey emotions, or even multiple emotions!

Use the Cling film and Vaseline Technique

If you want to create a dreamy feel to your photos, the old cling film and vaseline technique is brilliant! And the best part is that you’re using things that you probably already have in your home.

All you have to do is put cling film over your lens and secure it with tape or a hair tie. Then you just have to put Vaseline on the cling film in whatever way you want. This will blur the photo and create a really dreamy effect, I absolutely love it.

Get Creative with Your Hands

When you don’t have anything else to work with, your hands can be the best props! They can add a lot of interest to a photo just by putting them in different positions. You can ‘reach for the camera’ put your hands around your face, have them up in the air – anything! As long as you are creating interesting shapes or doing something with them, the photo is bound to be an improvement!

If you’re not sure about what to do with your hands, you can practise in the mirror to see what looks good and what doesn’t.

Play Dress Up

Playing dress up or cosplaying another character is always a lot of fun! It’s great to sometimes just be someone else, and often a lot of confidence comes with it! You can think about how this character would pose and what they would do, which is sometimes a lot easier as you can take inspiration from posters and movie stills.

I’ve been many different characters in the past, and I’ve loved doing them all as I love the preparation that comes with doing it!

Get Creative in Photoshop

Learning Photoshop has always been really fun to me and I love to try out new things and learning. Photoshop can really enhance your photo in all the right ways and there are endless amounts of tutorials on Youtube. Some of these tutorials even come with free photoshop actions such as eye enhancing and skin smoothing.

I’d love for you to have a play around with some of these and let me know how they go. And if you have any questions please do ask.
